For a website favicon, keep the default sizes (16, 32, 48, 64, 128, 256) in Single .ico mode — one favicon.ico covers browser tabs, bookmarks and Windows shortcuts. For a native app icon set (iOS/Android/Electron), select all 8 available sizes and switch to Separate (.zip) so each resolution ships as its own file, matching what most app packaging tools expect.

The default selection (16, 32, 48, 64, 128, 256) covers the sizes browsers and Windows request most often, keeping the file small. Add 24×24 if you're targeting older Windows toolbar contexts, or 96×96 for some Linux desktop environments and higher-density app launchers — toggle any of the 8 available sizes on or off with a single click.

Sizes at or below 32 pixels are rendered with pixelated (nearest-neighbor) scaling in the 'Preview at each size' panel, which matches exactly how a real favicon looks in a tiny browser tab — smoothing it would make the preview misleadingly softer than the actual icon. Sizes above 32 pixels use normal smooth scaling since that's how they render in practice.
