OCR first extracts text from the photo, then a language model translates it into the selected language. Accuracy depends on image clarity, source language and context, so review names, numbers, specialist terms and important instructions before use.

The Image language list covers the languages the OCR can read (more than 30), and Translate to offers English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Danish, Norwegian and Finnish. The two lists differ, so a language the OCR can read is not always available as a translation target.

Clean block-letter handwriting and chalkboard menus work in most cases — the OCR is tuned for everyday signage and casual handwriting. Yes. Choose the image language and the language to translate to, then press Translate image: one run reads the text from the picture and machine-translates it. The result panel shows one text at a time, and a toggle button switches between the detected original and the translation, which helps language learners compare phrasings. The tool does not detect the image language for you, so pick it before you translate.

Uploads are processed and removed under our Security policy — unless you explicitly share a result, which keeps it at a public link anyone who has it can open without automatic expiration while Pixoate provides the sharing service. Translation history is not saved on the server — your last result is held only in your browser tab and clears when you close the page. That makes the tool safe for travel emergencies, medical leaflets and personal correspondence translations.

Yes. The Copy button copies whichever text is showing, the detected original or the translation. The download button saves the translation as a plain .txt file. Travelers paste it into WhatsApp; students paste it into Notion; agencies paste it into translation memory tools for cleanup.

It swaps the underlying text-recognition model used before translation. Default works well for most printed signs and menus; Engine 1 and Engine 2 are alternates that can read stylized fonts, low-contrast photos or scripts the default struggles with more accurately. If the detected text looks wrong before it's even translated, switching engines is the first thing to try.

Changing the image language, the target language or the OCR engine clears the previous result, and nothing runs until you press Translate image again. This is deliberate: OCR is a metered step, so the tool won't silently re-scan the image every time you touch a dropdown, only when you confirm a fresh read.

Yes. Once a translation is ready, a toggle button switches the result panel between the detected source text and the translated text, and the single Copy button copies the version you are viewing. This helps language learners check how a phrase maps between languages, or verify the OCR read the sign correctly before trusting the translation.

Set the Source language dropdown to the actual language on the sign rather than leaving it on English, since OCR accuracy depends on matching the character set. Then try Engine 1 or Engine 2 if Default misreads stylized lettering — each engine has different strengths on decorative fonts and low-contrast photos. Getting the OCR text right matters more than the translation step, since a bad OCR read guarantees a bad translation regardless of target language.

Image language covers every script our OCR engines can read — around 30 languages depending on the OCR Engine you pick. Translate to draws from a shorter list of roughly 20 output languages that the translation backend supports. That means you can photograph text in almost any supported language, but the translated result can only come out in one of the languages shown under Translate to.

Yes — both the detected-text and translated-text boxes are editable, so you can type a correction directly into whichever one the toggle button is currently showing. Copy always grabs the text you're viewing at that moment, but Download .txt always saves the translated-text version specifically, even mid-edit on the original side — toggle to the translated view first if you want a source-text fix to carry into the downloaded file.

The upload accepts PNG, JPG, WEBP, GIF, TIFF, BMP, HEIC and HEIF, so an iPhone photo in its native HEIC format works without converting it to JPG first. Whichever format you use, set the Image language and OCR Engine to match the text in the photo before running OCR for the most accurate read.

Yes. Japanese is fully supported, so Japanese to English image translation works on menus, packaging, screenshots and manga pages with clear printed text. Dense stylised lettering and handwritten sound effects are harder — a sharp, well-lit photo of the page gives the OCR the best chance. Korean and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) work the same way.

Almost always one of three things. The file is over the 20 MB free upload limit — Premium takes 50 MB and Pro 120 MB. The format is not one this tool accepts, so check the list shown on the upload panel. Or the file is not really the format its name says: renaming a file does not change what is inside it, and that is the reason a valid-looking scan or photo gets refused.

Accuracy tracks the source image more than any setting. Shoot or scan straight on rather than at an angle, get even light with no shadow falling across the page, and fill the frame with the document. Set the language before you run it — OCR guessing the wrong alphabet is the usual cause of output that looks like nonsense. Always read the result before you rely on it.

You do not need an app that translates a picture: Image Translator opens in the browser on a phone or a computer. Scan or photograph the page, upload it and choose Translate image. It does not stream the camera or draw the translation over the picture, so keep the original photo nearby to compare.

Yes. Upload the screenshot like any photo, set Image language to the language on screen and choose Translate image. Sharp interface text reads well; tiny or low-contrast type is the likeliest to be misread, so check names and numbers in the detected text.

Editing the detected text does not run the translation again. Correct the translated text directly, or improve the picture, check Image language and choose Translate image again so both versions come from a clean read.

This tool takes pictures only. For a PDF with selectable text, use PDF Translator, which is built for whole files and keeps one section per page. A photo of a document page works here as an image.

There is a limit on how much text one picture can hold. A very full page, such as a dense document, may be refused with a request to crop the image. Crop it into sections and translate each part in turn.

Image language takes one language at a time. Choose the one you want read and translated, and crop the picture to that part if the other language confuses the result. Run the photo again with the second language to read both.

It reads the printed text in a picture and translates that text. It does not translate speech, live camera views or video, and it does not draw the translation over the photo. The result is text in a box that you can copy or download.

Yes. Image language includes Chinese in Simplified and Traditional script, Japanese and Korean, and Translate to covers Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese as well as English. Ornate or vertical lettering may be misread, so crop to the sign and try another OCR engine if it is.
