The Colorize engine switch lets you compare colorizers on the same photo. Engine 1 is the default — it suggests colors from the whole scene and applies them to your original photo, keeping its brightness and detail, though color placement may vary. Engine 2 adds color without redrawing your photo and is recommended for portraits and family photos. Engine 3 gives a softer, more muted vintage look that many people prefer for antique or period photos. Try them and keep whichever result looks most natural for your image.

For faces and skin tones, keep the vividness slider low to mid (around 30–50%) so colors stay believable and true-to-life. Push it higher for landscapes, foliage, flowers or clothing where you want richer, bolder color. If a colorized portrait looks over-saturated, lower the vividness and switch to Engine 3 for a gentler, film-like finish.

Almost always one of three things. The file is over the 20 MB free upload limit — Premium takes 50 MB and Pro 120 MB. The format is not one this tool accepts, so check the list shown on the upload panel. Or the file is not really the format its name says: renaming a file does not change what is inside it, and that is the reason a valid-looking image gets refused.

Start from the highest-resolution original you have. A screenshot of a photo, or a copy that has already been compressed and re-shared, gives the tool far less to work with and no setting recovers that. Then, where there is a strength control, come down from the default — most photos need less than the default suggests. Compare against your original at full size before you download.

Only the overall look. The colorizer decides colors from the scene, so you control the vividness and the engine rather than individual objects. If a dress or a car comes out wrong, try another engine or lower the vividness, then compare the results before you download.

Yes for a sepia print or another photo faded to a single tone, which is treated like a grayscale one. Restore Old Photo even selects Add color for such prints automatically. A color photo that has only faded needs clarity instead, so use Restore Old Photo with Improve clarity.

Open the Upscale tab and switch on 4× Resolution Boost, a Premium option. The colorized image is created at four times the width and height in the same run. Review the result before printing, because the added resolution is estimated detail.

It keeps what your scan already has. Only color is taken from the AI result, so brightness, grain and facial detail remain, which also means a soft scan stays soft. Sharpen it separately with the AI photo enhancer. Without Premium, the download is a web-size copy of the result.

Not with this tool. The colorizer adds color to grayscale or single-tone pictures. To change a color that is already in a photo, use the Color Changer, where you describe the object and its new color and review the edit before downloading.

This tool only adds color. To remove it, use the Black & White Image Converter, which turns a color photo into a monochrome one and lets you set the intensity before you download.
