Design a single-column resume: templates, accent colors, fonts and spacing
When you design a resume here, you get 3 templates, a color picker, 3 fonts and 3 spacing settings, with a live preview that updates as you type. Every layout is a single column of real text, so the design choices are about emphasis and tone rather than decoration. This page explains what each setting changes, what the builder deliberately leaves out and how to get a resume onto one page.
What changes between Classic, Modern and Minimal
Classic sets your name in a serif typeface, with the job title and section lines in your accent color. Modern puts the name and job title on a full-width band in the accent color. Minimal widens the margins and sets its section headings in a neutral dark tone above a thin gray rule, so it reads quietest. All 3 use the same content, and switching between them keeps everything you typed.
Set the accent color, font and spacing
The Accent color control has 8 preset swatches and a field for any hex value. Font is Sans, Serif or Mono, drawn from standard typefaces that every PDF reader can display. Spacing is Compact, Normal or Relaxed and changes the vertical gaps, which is the quickest way to fit a resume onto one page or to give a short one more air.
Reorder sections and add your own
In the Sections tab, drag Summary, Experience, Education and Skills into the order that suits the role. Use Add section for Projects, Certifications, Awards or Publications, each with its own title and bullet list. Inside Experience you can also drag entries, duplicate one as a starting point and delete the rest. Lead with the section an employer cares about most.
What the builder leaves out on purpose
There is no photo, no icon set, no skill bars, no sidebar and no tables, because those are the elements that can confuse applicant tracking systems. The builder also does not write your wording or build a cover letter, so write that in a word processor and convert it to PDF. The preview is an approximation and the PDF uses its own precise layout, so judge the downloaded file rather than the screen.
Moving from Kickresume: what carries over and what changes
Your content comes with you, either by copying each section or by importing a PDF or DOCX of your current resume. Here you get 3 templates in a single column, with no photo, graphics or writing assistant, and a Premium Word download for an editable file. Rebuild one real resume and compare the page count and text selection in the PDF before you rely on it.
Check these before you send the resume
- Open the PDF and confirm each section heading and date reads clearly at full size.
- Try each template with your real text, because line lengths change the look.
- Pick an accent color that stays legible when the resume is printed in black and white.
- Save a named version for each template you want to compare.
- Need a photo for your profile? Make one separately and upload it where that site asks.
FAQ
Is Pixoate a free Kickresume alternative?
Yes — build an ATS-friendly resume and download a PDF for free; editable DOCX is Premium or one credit. Kickresume's designed template gallery and AI writing help are its strengths.
Can I put a photo on my resume?
The builder has no photo field, and its layouts are text only so they stay readable to applicant tracking systems. If a profile or application asks for a photo, make one separately and upload it where that site asks for it.
Can I add a cover letter?
The builder makes a resume only. Write the cover letter in a word processor, convert it with Word to PDF, and combine it with the resume using Merge PDF if the application wants a single file.
How do I fit my resume on one page?
Switch Spacing to Compact, drop older or less relevant roles and trim each role to the achievements that matter for the job you want. Keep the summary to 3 or 4 lines, then open the downloaded PDF to check the page count.
Can I change the language of the section headings?
The built-in sections print in English. Summary, Work Experience, Education and Skills use English headings in the file. Custom sections use whatever title you type, so a translated Projects or Certifications heading works.
Is my resume uploaded when I download it?
Your details are sent to our server over HTTPS to build the PDF, kept only for delivery and removed under our Security policy. Your drafts and saved versions stay in your browser. Importing an old resume also sends the file you choose, so it can be read.
