Compress an image with the quality slider
Upload the image and open the Quality tab. The slider runs from 10 to 100 and starts at 30, and Quick Presets jump to High Compression, Medium, Balanced or High Quality. The preview shows how the picture will look but not its file size, so select See result to compress, then read the Original and Compressed sizes with the amount saved. Raise the quality a step if faces or text look rough.
Keep a transparent background when you compress a PNG
Output Format starts on JPEG, and JPEG cannot hold transparency, so a transparent PNG would come out on a white background. Open the Format tab and choose PNG (Transparency support) to keep the see-through areas, or WebP, which also keeps them and is labeled as the smallest option. Then look at the result at full size, because smooth gradients and soft edges are where heavy compression shows first.
Aim for a file size such as 100 KB
Type a number into Target file size (KB) and the compressor searches for the highest quality that fits, then narrows the picture a step at a time when quality alone is not enough. The quality slider switches off while a target is set. If the target cannot be reached, the closest result comes back, so check the size on the result screen. For a common limit, open the 100 KB version, which starts with the number filled in.
Go smaller by changing the size or the format
Pixel dimensions have a large effect on file size, alongside quality. When an image is far larger than the space it fills, set smaller dimensions or a percentage with the resizer before you compress. To switch to WebP, convert JPG files to WebP or convert PNG files to WebP, both of which offer a Lossless mode and show the new size before you download.

Does compressing an image change its pixel dimensions?
In normal mode the picture keeps its width and height and only the encoding changes. Dimensions drop when you set a Target file size that quality alone cannot reach, and an animated GIF is scaled down by an amount that depends on the quality. Use the resizer when you want to choose the dimensions yourself.
Why is my compressed PNG not much smaller?
PNG is designed to keep every pixel, so photos and detailed pictures shrink less than flat graphics do. Lower the quality, switch to JPEG or WebP when you do not need transparency, or reduce the pixel dimensions first. A file that was already compressed has little left to give.
Can I compress an animated GIF here too?
Yes. Choose GIF under Output Format and the compressor reduces the size and the number of colors of the animation according to the quality you set. The Target file size is ignored for GIF output. The GIF Compressor tool offers more control, with colors, lossy level and scale settings.
Should I resize an image before or after compressing it?
Resize first, then compress. Reducing the pixel dimensions removes data that compression would otherwise have to encode, and compressing last means you judge the quality of the picture you will actually use. Compress only once from the original, because each lossy save can add small flaws.
