BMP to JPG for the web: from uncompressed pixels to page-friendly files

BMP files usually store every pixel with no compression: a 24-bit BMP takes three bytes per pixel, so a 1920 × 1080 image is about 6 MB whatever it shows. They come from older Windows software, some scanners, lab and industrial equipment, and screenshots saved by legacy tools. Browsers can display BMP, but a BMP on a page makes every visitor download all those megabytes.

Converted to JPG at quality around 80, a photo-like BMP usually becomes a small fraction of that size. Screenshots and diagrams need more care, because flat colors and small text show JPG artifacts first; keep them at 90 or higher, where the converter keeps color at full resolution along edges. If a diagram is mostly flat color, BMP to PNG may give a cleaner and lighter file.

Then size it for the layout: resize to the display width and check the KB figure in Settings. Old software sometimes saved BMPs at small dimensions such as 640 × 480, which look soft when stretched across a modern layout, so upscale them with AI rather than letting the page enlarge them.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert BMP to JPG for a website?
JPG is broadly supported by browsers and site builders. Whether it is smaller than the BMP depends on the image, so compare the file size shown with the result and lower the quality where the format allows it if page weight matters.
Will the JPG look the same on my site?
For most images the difference is invisible at web sizes. Use the quality control to balance sharpness against file size.
Is this BMP-to-JPG converter free?
Yes — convert and download without creating an account. Your upload is auto-deleted after conversion.
Can I adjust the JPG output quality?
Yes. Review the converted JPG result and adjust quality when that format supports it. Keep a higher setting for detail, or lower it when file size matters more.

QualitySliderRange: 20–100 · Default: 90
For JPG, WebP, AVIF and image-to-PDF output: higher keeps more detail but makes a bigger file; 60–80 suits most photos. Documents (Publisher, XPS, EPS…) become PDFs with every page and sharp text, with no quality setting.
Lossless modeOn / Off
For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.
Background fillColor picker
For JPG, BMP and image-to-PDF output, which can’t store transparency: the colour that fills transparent areas (white by default).

How BMP to JPG helps you get it done

Real problems it solves every day — for businesses, creators, and everyday tasks. Find the use case that fits you and start.

Productivity

Shrink Legacy Screenshot Archives

Batch-convert a folder of old MS Paint or Windows Snipping Tool BMP screenshots into small JPGs with one shared Quality setting, then download the whole archive as a single ZIP.

For Business

Make Scanner & Fax Output Uploadable

Many older scanners and fax-to-PC software save pages as BMP, a format most upload portals and email clients reject — convert them to JPG so they can be attached or submitted anywhere.

Personal Use

Recover an Old Photo Backup Drive

Batch-convert a folder of decades-old BMP photos pulled off an old PC or USB stick into modern JPGs you can actually view, share and back up again.

For Developers

Digitize CAD & Technical Drawing Exports

Older CAD and engineering tools often export raster previews as BMP — convert them to JPG for reports, documentation or client presentations without the bulky file size.
