Why convert BMP to PNG?

  • PNG files are usually smaller than BMP for the same picture, so pages load faster and uploads finish sooner.
  • PNG is supported far more widely than BMP, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
  • PNG is made for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.

What to expect when converting BMP to PNG

  • Your original BMP file isn’t changed: you download a new PNG copy.
  • The PNG keeps the pixel dimensions of your BMP.

In short: choose BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels; choose PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.

BMP to PNG: the same pixels in a much smaller file

BMP files usually come from Windows Paint, older screenshot tools, legacy programs or devices that dump raw images. They are lossless but uncompressed, so even a plain 1920 × 1080 screenshot weighs about 6 MB. PNG is lossless too, so every pixel stays identical while compression typically makes screenshots and diagrams far smaller.

Most BMPs are 24-bit and fully opaque, and the PNG will be the same. A 32-bit BMP that stores an alpha channel keeps its transparency in the PNG; if every alpha value in the file is zero, which some programs write by mistake, the image is treated as opaque instead of invisible.

A few BMP variants can't be opened: files using RLE compression and files that wrap a JPEG or PNG inside. Re-save those as a standard uncompressed BMP, or straight to PNG, from the program that made them. Once converted, crop the screenshot to the part that matters or shrink it to a KB target for an upload form.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert BMP to PNG?
Upload your BMP file above. It is converted to PNG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting BMP to PNG lose quality?
No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is kept exactly.
BMP or PNG: which should I use?
Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Use PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs. Keep in mind the main drawback of PNG: large files for photographs.
What is a BMP file?
BMP stores pixels with no compression at all. Files are large, but very old or simple software that can’t read modern formats can usually read a BMP.
Is the BMP to PNG converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

For JPG, WebP, AVIF and image-to-PDF output: higher keeps more detail but makes a bigger file; 60–80 suits most photos. Documents (Publisher, XPS, EPS…) become PDFs with every page and sharp text, with no quality setting.

For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.

For JPG, BMP and image-to-PDF output, which can’t store transparency: the colour that fills transparent areas (white by default).
