Translate PDF document online and choose the language
This PDF translator works as a PDF file translator for documents with selectable text: it reads the text on each page, translates it into one of 20 languages and returns a new document as a PDF or a plain text file. Pick the source language or leave Auto-detect on, choose the target language, then select Translate my PDF. Scanned PDFs need text recognition first, and the result is a simplified layout rather than a copy of the original design.
Translate PDF to English
Upload the PDF and leave Translate from on Auto-detect, or pick the language the document is written in. Set Translate to as English, choose PDF or Text (.txt) under Download as, and select Translate my PDF. The result card shows the file name, how many pages were translated and the language that was detected.
- Upload the PDF you want to translate.
- Keep Auto-detect or choose the source language.
- Set Translate to as the language you want to read.
- Select Translate my PDF, then See result.
Choose from 20 languages and two download formats
As a PDF document language translator it offers English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. Translations into Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Chinese download as a text file, because the PDF fonts do not cover those scripts yet.
Free preview of the first pages, and longer documents
Without Premium, a free preview translates the first pages of the document and shows how many pages were translated, with a Translate all pages button for the rest. Premium translates whole documents, up to 50 pages per run, and batch mode translates several PDFs with the same language settings into one ZIP.
Pick PDF or text for the translated file
Under Download as, choose PDF when you want a file to read or hand on, and Text (.txt) when you want to paste the translation into an email or another document and keep working on it. Either way the result has one section for each source page.
Translate only some pages, or a long document in parts
A run covers documents up to 50 pages, and there is no page range field. To translate a few pages, save just those pages as their own PDF first. A longer document can be cut into parts the same way, translated one part at a time and read in order.
What the translated file does not keep
Only the selectable text is extracted and rebuilt, so pictures, charts and the original column layout are not reproduced, and a table arrives as lines of text. Keep the original PDF next to the translation, and use the translated file for reading and review rather than as a designed replacement.
Translate a scanned PDF
A scan has no selectable text, so the translator stops and asks for text recognition first. Turn the pages into pictures and translate the words inside each picture with Image Translator, which reads the text in an image and translates it.
Before you translate
- Try highlighting a sentence in your PDF viewer; if it will not highlight, the file is a scan and needs text recognition first.
- Machine translation can miss tone, names and numbers, so use a professional translator for documents that must be exact.
- A password-protected or damaged PDF cannot be read, so remove the password first if you know it.
- To adjust the wording afterward, convert the translated PDF to Word.
When the PDF is a scan or needs editing
Translation reads selectable text, so for a scanned PDF, render the pages as images and translate the text inside each picture. To adjust the wording afterward, convert the translation into an editable Word file.
