Getting a JPG from an XPS document on any device

XPS files are often created by accident: someone picked the Microsoft XPS Document Writer instead of a real printer, or a Windows program saved a receipt, statement or form that way. The file then won't open on most phones and Macs. Converting to JPG makes the first page viewable anywhere, which is often all you need for a one-page receipt or booking confirmation.

Page one is drawn at 150 dots per inch at the size it was printed, so a Letter page becomes 1275 × 1650 pixels: easy to read on a screen, a little soft for fine print. JPG compression can blur small type, so keep the quality at 90 or raise it when the page is mostly writing.

For documents longer than one page, convert the XPS to PDF instead; every page is kept, and you can then save chosen pages as images at higher resolution. To reuse the figures from a receipt or statement, extract the text from the JPG rather than retyping it.
