XPS to PNG for crisp images of forms and tables

PNG is the better image choice when an XPS page is mostly text, tables or line drawings, such as a printed spreadsheet, an application form or a diagram from an office program. Lossless compression leaves letters and grid lines free of JPG artifacts, which matters when the image will be read closely, marked up, or run through text recognition later.

Only the first page is rendered, at 150 DPI and the size it was printed at, so a full Letter page gives a PNG of 1275 × 1650 pixels. Pages full of photos make large PNG files; for those, a JPG copy is lighter and looks the same on screen.

If you only need one region, such as a totals table or a signature block, crop the PNG down to it. For every page, or for print resolution, first convert the XPS into a PDF, then export its pages as PNG at 200 or 300 DPI.
