How to edit text in an image and replace words in a photo
The AI text editor replaces words in a photo with text you type. Drag one rectangle around the old words, enter the replacement, choose a font and color, and the tool repairs the surface behind the old lettering and places your new words in the rectangle. It is built for straight lines of text on fairly plain surfaces, so a sign, a label or a caption works better than curved or heavily textured lettering.
Replace text in a photo in 5 steps
Enter the Replacement text first, one line of up to 180 characters, then draw a single rectangle around all the old words, including a small margin. The new words are centered in the rectangle and sized to fit it, so a larger rectangle allows larger lettering. Choose Sans serif, Serif or Monospace and a Text color, then select Apply changes. Edit again keeps your rectangle, so you can change the wording and apply it once more.
- Upload the photo that contains the words to replace.
- Type the Replacement text and choose a Font and Text color.
- Drag one rectangle around all of the old text with a small margin.
- Select Apply changes and wait for the result.
- Check the new words and the repaired surface, then download the PNG.
Draw the rectangle so the repair is clean
The rectangle must be one filled box around every letter you want gone, because separate patches around individual letters are refused. A box that is too small returns a request to select a larger rectangle. Leave space for the replacement too: a long phrase in a small box shrinks until the tool asks you to select a larger area or shorten the text. Plain walls, paper, sky and signs rebuild most cleanly, because only the surface under the lettering is reconstructed.
Match the font and color of the original
The replacement is typed in one of 3 fonts and a single color, not matched to the original lettering. Pick Serif for a printed, formal look and Sans serif for signs and labels, set the color to the nearest match by eye and compare it with unedited text nearby. Curved, rotated, perspective and decorative lettering is outside this version, which supports straight text.
Other ways to change words in a picture
To read or copy the words first, extract the text from the image; for a translation to type in, translate the words in the photo. To add new words on blank space rather than replace old ones, add styled text to the picture, and to remove lettering without replacing it, erase it with the object remover.
Before you download the edited text
- Use a sharp photo in which the text is straight and fully inside the frame.
- Check the area around the rectangle for visible seams in texture, shadow or gradient.
- Opaque images only: a transparent PNG is rejected until it is flattened onto a solid color.
- Without Premium the PNG is a web-size copy, and Premium lifts that size limit.
Working with text inside photos
To read or copy the original words before you change them, pull the text out of the image; for a translation of a sign or menu to type in, translate the words in the photo.
New captions on blank space, rather than replacements, come from adding styled text anywhere on the picture.
