Converting Minolta MRW files from DiMAGE and Dynax cameras
MRW is the RAW format of Minolta and Konica Minolta digital cameras: the DiMAGE 5, 7, A1 and A2 bridge cameras and the Dynax (sold as Maxxum in North America) 7D and 5D digital SLRs. Konica Minolta left the camera business in 2006 and handed its SLR line to Sony, which uses ARW, so MRW files date from roughly 2001 to 2006, and many current apps no longer open them.
Resolution runs from about 3 megapixels on the DiMAGE 5 to 8 on the A2 and A200, with the 7D and 5D at 6. That is enough for screens and small prints, so convert at the default quality of 90 and keep the full size. To print larger, upscale the JPG with AI after converting.
Old files are worth checking one by one. Colors follow the white balance the camera picked at the time, so a frame taken under household bulbs can come back warm, and that is easier to fix in an editor than to notice after printing. Keep a lossless master with MRW to PNG, and put a set of converted photos side by side to share them.
