Sending Hasselblad 3FR captures out as JPG proofs

A 3FR file comes from a Hasselblad medium-format camera, usually an H-series body such as the H3D, H4D, H5D or H6D. Phocus, Hasselblad's own software, normally turns 3FR files into FFF when it imports them, so a folder of 3FR files usually means captures copied straight from the card or a tethered session. Converting them to JPG is the quick way to show a client or an art director what was shot when Phocus is not on the computer in front of you.

H-series sensors have a squarer 4:3 frame than the 3:2 of most full-frame cameras, so a picture headed for a 3:2 print or a 16:9 slide needs trimming; crop each frame to the shape your layout expects after converting. Proofs don't need print-grade files, so the quality slider can come down from its starting value of 90, and stamping your name across each proof makes unpaid reuse less tempting.

Medium-format captures are heavy. Without a plan each upload can be up to 20 MB, Premium accepts 50 MB, and files from 100-megapixel bodies can be too large for the converter at all, so export those from Phocus. Once the client picks a frame for retouching, a lossless PNG from the same 3FR avoids a second round of JPG compression.
