PEF to JPG for Pentax DSLR photos

Pentax DSLRs, from the K10D through the K-1 and K-3 generations, save RAW as PEF unless the RAW format in the menu is switched to DNG. Check the extension before uploading: a .dng file goes to the DNG to JPG page, and this page takes .pef.

Pentax's Custom Image settings, such as Bright, Natural or Reversal Film, shape only the JPGs the camera makes. Converted here, a PEF is developed from the sensor data with the white balance set at capture, so colors can look more restrained than the camera's own JPGs. Brightness is adjusted automatically, which tends to help an underexposed frame but can lighten a deliberate silhouette.

For prints, keep quality at 90 or higher so color edges stay crisp, and order at a size the file supports; resize to the lab's pixel dimensions if they specify them. For sharing online, compress the JPG after converting, since a full-resolution K-series frame is far bigger than most sites need.
