Why convert SR2 to JPG?

- JPG is made for photos you share, email, print or upload.
- No Photoshop or Lightroom needed: the file is opened on our servers and you download a ready-to-use JPG.
What to expect when converting SR2 to JPG

SR2 vs JPG
| Feature | SR2 | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Sony camera RAW | JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) |
| Origin | Written by Sony cameras | Standardised in 1992 |
| Compression | Unprocessed sensor data | Lossy, adjustable quality |
| Transparency | No | No |
| Animation | No | No |
| Colour | 12 to 16 bits per channel from the sensor | 16.7 million colours (8 bits per channel) |
| Where it opens | RAW editors such as Lightroom; not browsers or most apps | All browsers, phones, computers and photo apps |
| Best for | adjusting exposure and white balance with maximum latitude | photos you share, email, print or upload |
| Main drawback | very large files that most apps can’t open | no transparency, and every re-save loses a little more detail |
In short: choose SR2 for adjusting exposure and white balance with maximum latitude; choose JPG for photos you share, email, print or upload.
Opening Sony DSC-R1 SR2 files and saving them as JPG
SR2 files almost always come from one camera: the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1, a fixed-lens bridge camera from the mid-2000s with an unusually large sensor for its type. Sony's later Alpha and RX models write ARW instead, so if a folder mixes both, convert the newer Sony files on the ARW page. Many phones, web forms and photo apps won't display an SR2, because it holds sensor readings rather than a finished picture.
To view one, upload it here. The server develops the sensor data and shows the result in the preview before you download, so you can check each frame first. Development uses the white balance the R1 recorded and sets brightness automatically, which means a frame you underexposed on purpose can come out lighter than you remember. The JPG keeps the original file name with a .jpg ending, so DSC01234.SR2 becomes DSC01234.jpg and every copy is easy to match to its source.
JPG quality starts at 90, and at 90 or above the color information is stored at full resolution instead of being shared between neighboring pixels, which helps fine colored edges such as leaves against a bright sky. Around 80 gives a noticeably smaller file for email. Converting an archive one frame at a time is slow: Premium handles up to 60 files per batch and Pro up to 200, returned as one ZIP. When a form asks for a file under a set size, shrink the JPG to a KB target.
Before you delete any SR2 file
- Look at skies and white clothing for flat, washed-out patches; automatic brightness can push bright areas too far.
- Zoom in on high-ISO frames. The camera's own noise reduction isn't applied, so grain can look stronger than in JPGs the R1 made itself.
- Keep the SR2 originals: the JPG has 8 bits per channel and can't be developed again with different exposure.
- If you want a lossless editing copy rather than a sharing copy, make a PNG from the SR2 instead.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert SR2 to JPG?
- Upload your SR2 file above. It is converted to JPG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting SR2 to JPG lose quality?
- JPG is lossy, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. Raise the quality in Settings for a closer copy.
- SR2 or JPG: which should I use?
- Use SR2 for adjusting exposure and white balance with maximum latitude. Use JPG for photos you share, email, print or upload. Keep in mind the main drawback of JPG: no transparency, and every re-save loses a little more detail.
- What is a SR2 file?
- SR2 is the RAW format of the Sony DSC-R1. It stores the unprocessed sensor data for maximum editing latitude, so most apps can’t show it as a normal picture.
- Can I convert SR2 to JPG without Photoshop or Lightroom?
- Yes. The SR2 file is opened on our servers, so you don’t need Photoshop or Lightroom or any other software installed. Upload the file, then download the finished JPG.
- Is the SR2 to JPG converter free?
- Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
