SR2 to PNG: a lossless editing copy of DSC-R1 photos

PNG makes sense for an SR2 when the converted picture is a starting point rather than the final file. If you plan to retouch, crop and save several times in an editor that can't read Sony's old RAW format, a PNG copy adds no compression on any of those saves, while a JPG loses a little more each time it is re-saved.

Expect a big file. An R1 frame is about 10 megapixels, and stored losslessly a photo of that size usually takes several times the space of a high-quality JPG. There is no quality slider for PNG; the page simply writes every pixel. The result is fully opaque, since a camera exposure has no transparent areas, and it holds 8 bits per channel, so it carries fewer tonal steps than the sensor data inside the SR2. Hold on to the RAW if you might want to rescue shadows or highlights later.

Some print labs and layout apps prefer TIFF; pick TIFF in the Output format list on the Settings tab and the same development is saved as a lossless TIFF instead. Once your edits are done, you can cut the subject out onto transparency or trim the picture to the framing you want. For a lighter file to share, the sibling page turns an SR2 into a JPG.
