How to count eggs in a photo of trays, flats or a collection table
Photograph the tray from above and this egg counter marks each egg it can see, so you can check the number before you log the day's collection. It suits trays, flats and collection tables where the eggs sit in one layer, and it keeps a running tally across trays, sheds or orders. It counts eggs; it does not grade or weigh them.
Count eggs in a tray from above
Stand over the tray so the camera looks straight down and every egg is fully in frame. Even light helps here, because a shadow across a dimple can pick up a dot where there is no egg, and a brown egg on a brown tray can be missed.
- Set the tray on a plain surface, or hold it level under an even light.
- Upload the photo or tap Take a photo; egg counting starts automatically.
- Wait for the automatic count and review the dots.
- Compare the dots with the eggs row by row and move Included markers if one is wrong.
- Select Add to tally and name the row for the tray.
Photograph stacked flats, baskets and cartons
Only the top layer of a stack shows, so lift each flat off and count one at a time. Loose eggs in a basket overlap, so tip them into a single layer on a tray first. Open the lid of a carton before you shoot, because eggs you cannot see are not counted, and hold the lid up if it throws a shadow across the row. For packed cartons stacked on a shelf or pallet, count egg cartons from a photo instead.
Total a day's collection across trays and sheds
Add each tray to the tally as you go and name the row for the shed, house or collection time. The rows stay in your browser between visits, the Total row adds them up and Export CSV saves them for your production log. If one row is off, retype its Count instead of running the photo again.
With Premium, Bulk audit counts a queue of tray photos in one run and shows a grand total. Review each automatic count before using it. Eggs should be visible in one layer. When trays are boxed for dispatch, count the cartons on each pallet from a photo of its face.
Check an egg order before it goes out
For a market or dispatch order, photograph each tray and compare its reviewed tally row with the order. If you need separate totals for different colors or sizes, photograph those groups separately. The automatic total does not provide a reliable grade or size split.
Before you count the eggs
- Clear straw, feathers and paperwork out of the frame so nothing else looks like an egg.
- Pick a tray or surface that contrasts with the eggs where you can.
- Hold the camera level over the tray, not tilted, so the rows stay straight.
- Add the number to the tally only after every dot matches an egg.
- If you log the flock as well, count the birds in a pen photo and read best-by dates on packed cartons.
After counting the egg trays
Fruit and vegetables from the same farm can be counted by crate, tray or conveyor, and the flock itself can be counted in a pen or field photo. Best-by dates printed on packed cartons can be read into a date watchlist.
