Counting cupcakes on trays, in boxes and on display stands
Cupcakes are tall, round and topped, which makes them easy to see from above and easy to hide from the side. Bakeries count them after decorating, before a large event order leaves, through the day on the counter display, and at close for waste. Each setting needs a slightly different photo, but all of them work best with the camera looking straight down onto the tops.
Frosting swirls and sprinkles give every cupcake a busy top, which can make one cake look like several small shapes. Mark one complete cupcake, liner included, as the example in Similar items, and add a second example if minis and standard sizes share a tray. Boxed orders with clear lids reflect the ceiling lights, so open the lids or tilt the box away from the light. A tiered stand hides the lower tiers behind the upper ones; photograph each tier from above, or count before the stand is built.
Where two swirls touch, check that both cakes carry a marker, then add each tray or tier as a labelled row. For event orders, the CSV doubles as a packing note. Boxed orders stacked for collection can be counted as boxes, and cookie trays from the same order follow the same routine.

Frequently asked questions
- Do the items need to be separated before counting?
- Slight touching can work, but full overlaps hide items and make the result less reliable. Spread them one layer deep under even light, mark a clear example, and review every result marker.
- What if the photo has more than just cupcakes in it?
- The counter automatically looks for cupcakes in your photo. Similar-looking distractors can still affect the result, so review every marker before using the total.
- Can I count several photos into one total?
- Yes — count each photo and add every reviewed result to the tally sheet as a labelled row. Export the tally as CSV or a PDF report, or save it to your account.
- Is it free and private?
- Yes. You can count, review and download a free result without an account. Downloads are free without a watermark. No signup required. Server-processed photos are encrypted in transit and removed under our Security policy.
