Counting fabric rolls on racks from the roll ends
Fabric rolls are counted in textile warehouses by fabric and colorway, at goods-in against the mill delivery note, and in the cutting room before a production run. Stored on racks or stacked on the floor, each roll shows a round end, often with a cardboard core in the center, and those ends are what the photo counts.
Stand in front of the rack and photograph the roll ends straight-on, one rack bay at a time. Plastic wrap over the ends reflects the warehouse lights, so angle the camera slightly or switch off the light directly above. A floor pyramid of rolls shows every end on its face, but rolls at the back can sit in shadow, so add light from the front. Full and part-used rolls on one rack have different diameters and should be marked as separate Similar items examples.
Fabric code and colorway belong in each tally row label once the markers are checked. Cones on a creel are counted with the yarn cone counter, pipe bundles use the same end-on technique, and finished garments can join the stock-take.

- How should I photograph a bundle for counting?
- Shoot the ends straight-on, close enough that each end is at least a few pixels across, with even light and no strong shadows inside the bundle. Use the dots to review each retained detection, then correct misses or duplicates before using the total.
- What if the photo has more than just fabric rolls in it?
- The counter automatically looks for fabric rolls in your photo. Similar-looking distractors can still affect the result, so review every marker before using the total.
- Can I count several photos into one total?
