Counting germinated sprouts for a germination rate
Sprouts are counted to work out germination: on set days of a germination test, across varieties in a trial, and in nursery propagation before pricking out. The number you need is the emerged sprouts in a tray, which you then divide by the seeds sown. This page gives you the reviewed sprout count; the rate and any certification sit outside it.
Photograph the tray straight down in even light, close enough that a small root or the first shoot is visible. Rolled paper towel tests need unrolling and laying flat first. Decide what counts as germinated, for example a visible root, before you start, and mark one sprout that meets your rule as the example in Similar items. Ungerminated seeds sit in the same tray, so any marker that lands on a seed with no shoot should come off the total.
One row per tray per count day keeps the arithmetic traceable when you divide by the seeds sown. The seeds themselves can be counted before sowing with the seed counter, and seedlings that grow on are tracked with the seedling counter.

- How do I count long rows or beds?
- Photograph one bed or section at a time from as high an angle as practical, keep rows in focus, then review and correct each result before adding it to the tally sheet. Marked photos support review but are not proof of physical quantity.
- Can I work out a germination rate from this?
- Count the emerged sprouts, review and correct the markers, then divide by the number of seeds you sowed. The tally sheet keeps each tray as its own labelled row so the arithmetic stays traceable. The result is a reviewed draft, not a certified germination test.
- What if the photo has more than just sprouts in it?
- The counter automatically looks for sprouts in your photo. Similar-looking distractors can still affect the result, so review every marker before using the total.
- Can I count several photos into one total?
- Yes — count each photo and add every reviewed result to the tally sheet as a labelled row. Export the tally as CSV or a PDF report, or save it to your account.
