    Why is thermal printing only black and white?
    There is no ink. Heat darkens a coating on the paper, so a pixel is either heated or it is not. Tone has to be faked through dithering, which is why receipts have that distinctive coarse dotted appearance.
    Why does the output look faded in places?
    Real thermal heads produce uneven heat and the paper darkens inconsistently, especially as a roll ages. Reproducing that fade and banding is what stops the result reading as a plain threshold filter.
