Put an image-only table into a README people can edit
Prepare a readable Markdown table from an image of rows and columns. Review both the recognized values and the pipe-table syntax, since spanning headings, line breaks and literal pipe characters may need manual adjustments.
Reference tables in README files
Rebuild a small image-only comparison table as text that can be reviewed in a source diff and rendered with your documentation.
Tabular notes in Markdown notebooks
Keep a compact reference table editable alongside your own explanation, with the original image retained for verification.
Check table syntax as carefully as the recognized values
- Crop to a single table and preserve its header labels.
- Compare cell values and check that header separators and data rows have consistent columns.
- Preview the Markdown table and simplify merged cells or embedded line breaks where needed.
Merged cells, literal pipes and Markdown header rows
- Can a Markdown table represent merged image cells exactly?
- Basic pipe tables do not support merged cells. Flatten spanning headings, repeat labels or describe the grouping in surrounding text.
- What should I do with a pipe character inside a table cell?
- Check how your renderer escapes literal pipe characters. An unescaped pipe can split one value into multiple columns.
- Is Markdown the right export for a large numeric table?
- Markdown suits readable documentation. Choose CSV for data import or Excel for a worksheet when you need numeric analysis or many records.
- Why does the first extracted row need special attention?
- Markdown tables use a header row followed by a separator row. Confirm that the actual heading was recognized and that a data row was not promoted to the header.
- How do I right-align numbers in the Markdown table?
- Add a colon at the right end of the dashes in the separator line, and most renderers right-align that column. Alignment marks are Markdown syntax, so you add them in the box after the values are right.
- Can I paste the Markdown table into a spreadsheet?
- Many spreadsheets will not split a pipe table for you. For cells you can sort, convert the picture with Table Image to Excel or Table Image to CSV, which show a grid you can correct, instead of pasting Markdown into a worksheet.
- What happens to a caption or title above the table?
- It arrives as a plain line before the table in the box. Keep it as a heading or a sentence above the table, or delete it. Footnotes below the table arrive the same way and stay outside the pipe syntax.
- Does the converter handle a table with no header row?
- A Markdown table always has a header row, and the first row read is used for it. If your picture has none, add a line of column names above the data in the box, or rename the cells of the first data row.
- Can I convert two small tables that sit in one picture?
- Crop each into its own image for the cleanest results. Two tables in one picture can be read as a single block, and their different column counts show up as lines with unequal pipes that you then split into two tables in the box.
- Can I convert a table written in another language?
- Yes. Choose the table's language under Engine before you extract, since the list depends on the Engine and a change clears the result. Check accented words and non-Latin characters in the box, as they are the first to need fixing.
