Opening Canon CR3 files as JPG when your software only knows CR2
Canon switched from CR2 to CR3 in 2018, starting with the EOS M50, and every EOS R mirrorless camera since then writes CR3, from the R and RP to the R5, R6, R7, R8, R10, R50 and R100. Late DSLRs such as the EOS 90D and 250D, and compacts like the PowerShot G7 X Mark III, use it as well. Editing programs and older systems that handled CR2 for years often show a CR3 as an unknown file, which is usually why people need a JPG: it opens everywhere, straight away.
The JPG is developed from the sensor data using the white balance the camera saved. Picture Style settings such as Portrait, Landscape or Monochrome are not applied, so a frame shot in Monochrome comes back in color, and contrast can look different from the camera preview. If the black-and-white look is what you wanted, turn the JPG black and white after converting.
CR3 files are large, especially from 45-megapixel bodies like the R5, while C-RAW, Canon's compressed option, makes noticeably smaller files. Without a plan, each upload can be up to 20 MB; Premium raises that to 50 MB. For Instagram, resize the JPG to a post size before uploading, and if you need a lossless file for retouching, CR3 to PNG is the sibling page.
Check the converted CR3
- Monochrome or other Picture Style shots may need their look applied again
- Frames shot under tungsten or LED light show the white balance the camera chose
- Vertical shots stand upright before you post them
- The file is small enough for where it is going; if not, lower the quality and convert again
