FFF vs JPG
| Feature | FFF | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Hasselblad camera RAW | JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) |
| Origin | Written by Hasselblad cameras | Standardised in 1992 |
| Compression | Unprocessed sensor data | Lossy, adjustable quality |
| Transparency | No | No |
| Animation | No | No |
| Colour | 12 to 16 bits per channel from the sensor | 16.7 million colours (8 bits per channel) |
| Where it opens | RAW editors such as Lightroom; not browsers or most apps | All browsers, phones, computers and photo apps |
| Best for | adjusting exposure and white balance with maximum latitude | photos you share, email, print or upload |
| Main drawback | very large files that most apps can’t open | no transparency, and every re-save loses a little more detail |
In short: choose FFF for adjusting exposure and white balance with maximum latitude; choose JPG for photos you share, email, print or upload.
FFF to JPG: sharing Hasselblad files from a Phocus library
Phocus stores imported Hasselblad captures as FFF files, so FFF is what many H-series owners keep in their libraries and backups, rather than the 3FR files the camera wrote to the card. Phocus is the natural place to export JPGs, but when you are on another computer, or a client sends FFF files and nothing else, this page develops them without it.
Expect the 4:3 shape of a medium-format sensor and large pixel dimensions. The JPG keeps every pixel, so even at the default quality of 90 it can run to many megabytes; for a web portfolio, scale it down to the width your site displays and then bring it under about 1 MB. The biggest frames from 100-megapixel bodies may exceed what the converter accepts, and Phocus remains the way to export those.
Converting a whole job? Premium's batch mode takes up to 60 files per ZIP (200 on Pro), all with the same quality. Captures still in 3FR form have a converter of their own, and frames going to a retoucher are better as lossless PNGs from the FFF.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert FFF to JPG?
- Upload your FFF file above. It is converted to JPG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting FFF to JPG lose quality?
- JPG is lossy, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. Raise the quality in Settings for a closer copy.
- FFF or JPG: which should I use?
- Use FFF for adjusting exposure and white balance with maximum latitude. Use JPG for photos you share, email, print or upload. Keep in mind the main drawback of JPG: no transparency, and every re-save loses a little more detail.
- What is a FFF file?
- FFF is the RAW format Hasselblad’s Phocus software and Flextight scanners save. It stores the unprocessed sensor data for maximum editing latitude, so most apps can’t show it as a normal picture.
- Can I convert FFF to JPG without Photoshop or Lightroom?
- Yes. The FFF file is opened on our servers, so you don’t need Photoshop or Lightroom or any other software installed. Upload the file, then download the finished JPG.
- Is the FFF to JPG converter free?
- Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
