Converting Nikon NEF files to JPG, from DSLRs to Z-series mirrorless

NEF is the RAW format of Nikon's interchangeable-lens cameras: every DSLR from the D1 of 1999 through models like the D750, D850 and D7500, and Z-series mirrorless bodies such as the Z5, Z6, Z8, Z9 and Zf. Later Coolpix compacts use a different RAW format, NRW, which has a separate converter page.

Your JPG is developed with the white balance the camera saved, but Picture Control settings such as Vivid, Monochrome or a custom Picture Control are not applied, so contrast and color can differ from what the camera screen showed. The file name carries over: DSC_0412.NEF downloads as DSC_0412.jpg, which keeps converted frames easy to match with the originals.

Nikon lets you record NEF uncompressed, lossless compressed or compressed, and the compressed options make uploads easier. Without a plan, each file can be up to 20 MB; Premium takes 50 MB.
