  • PNG is made for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.

In short: choose NEF for adjusting exposure and white balance with maximum latitude; choose PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.

NEF to PNG: lossless copies of Nikon photos for cropping and design

Nikon shooters often crop hard, especially in wildlife, birding and sports, where the subject fills only part of the frame. Cropping and retouching a PNG keeps every remaining pixel exactly as developed, so a tight crop or a cleaned-up branch is not softened again by JPG compression each time you save.

The trade-off is depth and size. The PNG stores 8 bits per color channel, while a NEF holds 12 or 14 bits depending on the camera setting, so fix big exposure problems in a RAW editor or keep the NEF for that later. File size is the other cost: a PNG from a 24- or 45-megapixel Nikon is many times the size of a JPG.

Next, cut the animal or player out for a poster or slide, or add a caption or photo credit. For sharing straight away, NEF to JPG makes a much smaller file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert NEF to PNG?
Upload your NEF file above. It is converted to PNG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting NEF to PNG lose quality?
No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is kept exactly.
NEF or PNG: which should I use?
Use NEF for adjusting exposure and white balance with maximum latitude. Use PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs. Keep in mind the main drawback of PNG: large files for photographs.
What is a NEF file?
NEF is Nikon’s RAW format for its DSLR and Z-series mirrorless cameras. It stores the unprocessed sensor data for maximum editing latitude, so most apps can’t show it as a normal picture.
Can I convert NEF to PNG without Photoshop or Lightroom?
Yes. The NEF file is opened on our servers, so you don’t need Photoshop or Lightroom or any other software installed. Upload the file, then download the finished PNG.
Is the NEF to PNG converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
