How a photo fits onto an A4 page

Every image is scaled so that it fits wholly inside the page minus the margins, then centered. An A4 page is about 1.41 times taller than wide, so a portrait phone photo at 3:4 is slightly wider in proportion and leaves bands at the top and bottom, while a landscape photo on a portrait page is shrunk to the page width and leaves large bands above and below. Nothing is cropped, and a small image is scaled up to fill the space, which softens it.

Choose orientation once for the whole document

Portrait and Landscape are a single setting for every page. If your set mixes upright documents with a few wide ones, either build two PDFs and combine them afterwards, or switch Paper size to Image fit, which gives each page its own shape but is no longer A4.
