ICO to JPG: getting an icon into a document or slide
People open .ico files to reuse a program or website icon somewhere that only takes ordinary pictures: a slide, a report, a support ticket. An .ico usually holds the same picture at several sizes, and the converter uses the largest one stored, so a modern icon gives you up to 256 × 256 pixels while an old favicon may give only 16 or 32.
JPG can't hold transparency, and icons are mostly transparent around their shape. The converter paints those areas with a solid color from Background fill, starting as white; set it to your slide or page color so the icon doesn't sit in a box. Keep the quality at 90 or above, where full color resolution is kept, because small colored shapes blur quickly at lower settings.
Need it bigger than the icon allows? Scaling a 32-pixel icon up only makes bigger blocks, so try the AI upscaler on it and judge the result before using it. For a version with a transparent background, extract a PNG instead.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert ICO to JPG?
- Upload your ICO file above. It is converted to JPG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting ICO to JPG lose quality?
- JPG is lossy, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. Raise the quality in Settings for a closer copy.
- Will the JPG keep the transparent background?
- No. JPG can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
- ICO or JPG: which should I use?
- Use ICO for website favicons and Windows app or shortcut icons. Use JPG for photos you share, email, print or upload. Keep in mind the main drawback of JPG: no transparency, and every re-save loses a little more detail.
- What is a ICO file?
- An ICO file bundles one picture at several sizes, from 16 to 256 pixels, so browsers and Windows can pick the sharpest version for a tab, bookmark or desktop shortcut.
- Is the ICO to JPG converter free?
- Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
