ICO to PNG: extracting the largest icon with its transparency
PNG is the usual way out of an .ico file because it keeps the icon's transparent background, which JPG can't. Designers use it to drop an app or site icon into a mockup, a documentation page or a design tool that won't open .ico.
An icon file is a bundle of sizes, and you get one PNG: the largest image stored in it. Modern Windows icons usually carry a 256-pixel version, while a website's favicon.ico often stops at 32 or 48. Entries stored in compressed PNG form are used as they are; older bitmap entries need 24- or 32-bit color, so an icon containing only 2-, 16- or 256-color images can't be opened.
Transparency comes through as stored: smooth edges from 32-bit icons, hard edges from older icons that use a simple on/off mask. Switch the Transparency preview between Grid and Website to see both. For a different pixel size, resize the PNG, keeping PNG as the output so the transparency stays, and keep in mind that going beyond the largest stored size adds no detail. To make icons from your own artwork instead, build them in the ICO converter.
Check the extracted icon
- The pixel size is the largest one inside the .ico; scale down for smaller uses.
- Edges look clean on both light and dark backgrounds.
- A favicon that stops at 16 or 32 pixels gives a tiny PNG; confirm it is big enough for its new use.
