Using an ICO icon on a web page as WebP
When a site shows icons inside its pages, as feature bullets, app tiles or a list of links, the browser needs an image format rather than an .ico. WebP fills that role with transparency intact and tiny files. The converter takes the largest picture inside the icon file.
Icons are graphics with hard edges and flat color, so Lossless mode is usually the better choice: it keeps every pixel, and at icon sizes the file is still small. Lossy WebP at high quality is fine for photographic app icons. View the result in the Website preview to judge it against a page background.
If the icon must fill a specific display size, such as 64 pixels for a 32-pixel slot on a high-density screen, resize it with WebP as the output, but not beyond the largest size stored in the .ico. To build an icon set for your own site rather than reuse one, generate a favicon pack.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert ICO to WebP?
- Upload your ICO file above. It is converted to WebP automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting ICO to WebP lose quality?
- WebP is lossy by default, so some fine detail is discarded to make the file smaller. Raise the quality or switch on lossless in Settings for a closer copy.
- Will the WebP keep the transparent background?
- Yes. WebP supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
- ICO or WebP: which should I use?
- Use ICO for website favicons and Windows app or shortcut icons. Use WebP for websites, online stores and blogs that need fast-loading images. Keep in mind the main drawback of WebP: older apps and some upload forms don’t accept it.
- What is a ICO file?
- An ICO file bundles one picture at several sizes, from 16 to 256 pixels, so browsers and Windows can pick the sharpest version for a tab, bookmark or desktop shortcut.
- Is the ICO to WebP converter free?
- Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
