Why convert ICO to BMP?

  • BMP is made for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.
  • BMP needs no decoding, so very simple or older software can display it.

What to expect when converting ICO to BMP

  • BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
  • Your original ICO file isn’t changed: you download a new BMP copy.

In short: choose ICO for website favicons and Windows app or shortcut icons; choose BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.

ICO to BMP for legacy Windows tools and simple displays

Older Windows programs, resource editors and some embedded displays read BMP but not ICO. Converting writes the largest image inside the .ico as a 24-bit BMP they can load.

This BMP has no alpha channel, so every transparent pixel takes the Background fill color. White is the default; if the program treats one particular color as see-through, enter that color as the fill so the icon's background vanishes where it is shown. Soft edges blend into the fill, so pick the color the icon will actually sit on.

The BMP is uncompressed, though at icon sizes it stays small: a 256 × 256 image comes to under 200 KB. Its pixel size is that of the largest icon inside, and stretching it later only blurs it. For a copy that keeps the transparency, extract a PNG instead; for a slide or a document, a JPG with the same fill is lighter still.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert ICO to BMP?
Upload your ICO file above. It is converted to BMP automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting ICO to BMP lose quality?
No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is kept exactly.
Will the BMP keep the transparent background?
No. BMP can’t store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick in Settings (white by default).
ICO or BMP: which should I use?
Use ICO for website favicons and Windows app or shortcut icons. Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Keep in mind the main drawback of BMP: very large files and no transparency.
What is a ICO file?
An ICO file bundles one picture at several sizes, from 16 to 256 pixels, so browsers and Windows can pick the sharpest version for a tab, bookmark or desktop shortcut.
Is the ICO to BMP converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
