JPG to PNG before printing: what it fixes and what it cannot

Some print shops and design programs ask for PNG, and converting a JPG meets that request without another round of lossy compression. The PNG keeps the JPG's pixels exactly. It does not undo the compression the JPG already has, so any blockiness or halos around edges that you can see when zoomed in will print too.

Look at the pixel count before ordering. Print size in inches is the pixel width divided by the resolution the printer works at, and many shops ask for about 300 pixels per inch, so an 8 × 10 inch print wants roughly 2400 × 3000 pixels. A typical 12-megapixel phone photo, about 4000 × 3000, covers that comfortably, while a picture saved from a chat app may be far smaller. When it falls short, enlarge it 2×, 3× or 4× with AI; for soft focus or noise, enhance the photo first.

Ask whether the shop also accepts TIFF or PDF, because a full-page PNG photo can exceed an upload form's size limit. Crop to the print's proportions before converting, using a preset ratio in the cropper, so the lab does not trim your edges for you.

Frequently asked questions

What quality should I use when converting JPG to PNG for print?
Use the highest quality setting for print — printers resolve more detail than screens, so avoid heavy compression.
Does converting JPG to PNG lose detail?
At high quality the loss is minimal. For archival or large-format print, keep quality at or near maximum.
Can I adjust the PNG output quality?
Yes. Review the converted PNG result and adjust quality when that format supports it. Keep a higher setting for detail, or lower it when file size matters more.
What happens to my JPG upload after conversion?
The file is used only to create the requested PNG result and is automatically deleted after the temporary processing period.

For JPG, WebP, AVIF and image-to-PDF output: higher keeps more detail but makes a bigger file; 60–80 suits most photos. Documents (Publisher, XPS, EPS…) become PDFs with every page and sharp text, with no quality setting.
Lossless modeOn / Off
For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.

For JPG, BMP and image-to-PDF output, which can’t store transparency: the colour that fills transparent areas (white by default).

How JPG to PNG helps you get it done

Real problems it solves every day — for businesses, creators, and everyday tasks. Find the use case that fits you and start.

For Developers

Layered Editing Without Recompression Loss

Convert a JPG source to PNG before opening it in Photoshop, GIMP or Affinity so every re-save during editing stays pixel-exact instead of re-introducing JPEG artifacts each time the file is saved.

Publishing

Print-Ready Artwork for Print Shops

Many print and direct-to-garment services reject compressed JPGs for logos and text-heavy artwork — converting to PNG keeps solid colors and thin lines free of JPEG banding before you upload to the print vendor.

For Business

Batch-Convert a Whole Shoot for Client Delivery

Switch to Batch mode to convert a full folder of delivered JPGs to lossless PNG in one pass and download a single ZIP, instead of converting photographer or agency deliverables one file at a time.

For Creators

Text & Caption Overlays That Stay Crisp

Convert a JPG to PNG before adding bold captions, watermarks or callout text in a meme generator, social template or slide deck, since PNG has no compression to blur or halo sharp text edges the way re-saving a JPG does on every edit.
