RWL to JPG for Leica D-Lux and V-Lux compacts
RWL is the RAW format of the Leica compacts built in partnership with Panasonic, such as the D-LUX 5 and the V-Lux bridge cameras. Leica's other lines use a different format: the M, Q and SL cameras record DNG, which the DNG to JPG page converts. If an RWL reminds you of a Lumix file, that's because the two camera families share much of their hardware.
The converter develops the RWL from the sensor data with the recorded white balance and automatic brightness. Leica's in-camera color settings and film modes shape only the JPGs the camera makes itself, so the result here is a neutral starting point. Wide-angle shots may also show the slight edge distortion the camera normally corrects internally.
Most RWL files end up as holiday and travel pictures shared with friends. For email, lower the quality to about 80 and reduce the pixel size before sending, or compress the JPG to roughly 1 MB when a mail service rejects large attachments. Keep the RWL itself in your archive; it is the only version that can be developed again.
