Counting cans on a shelf, in a tray or in a display

Store staff count cans during a shift to refill shelves, check a delivery against the invoice and spot shrinkage between full stock takes. On a shelf only the front can in each lane is visible, so photograph the shelf face straight-on and count the front row; if the shelf is uniformly stocked, multiply by the lane depth and label the result as an estimate. Shrink-wrapped trays of cans are easier from above, where every lid is a ring.

Metal cans and curved labels reflect store lighting as a bright vertical stripe, so stand square to the shelf and skip the flash. Different flavors of one brand share a shape, and Auto mode looks for cans in general; for one figure per flavor, mark one can of each as separate examples, up to three, or photograph each flavor block on its own. Pyramid displays hide the cans in the middle, so count those layer by layer.

Label each tally row by aisle and shelf, such as "Aisle 3, shelf 2", and export the CSV after the walk. Bottled drinks have their own bottle counter, glass jars are covered on the jar counter, and shelf audits that count product facings per brand are explained on the facings page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count a whole shelf accurately?
Shoot each shelf face straight-on in even light, count the visible front row, and multiply by the row depth if the shelf is uniformly stocked — or photograph each row. The tally sheet adds shelf-by-shelf rows into one total.
What if the photo has more than just cans in it?
Auto mode uses the selected item name to find what to count. For a guided recount, mark one complete, clearly visible cans — up to 3 examples for different-looking kinds. Similar-looking distractors can still affect the result, so review every marker before using the total.
Can I count several photos into one total?
Yes — count each photo and add every reviewed result to the tally sheet as a labelled row. If you use example boxes, mark them separately on each photo. Export the tally as CSV or a PDF report, or save it to your account.
Is it free and private?
Yes. You can count, review and download a free result without an account. Downloads are free without a watermark. No signup required. Server-processed photos are encrypted in transit and removed under our Security policy.

How Bottle Counter helps you get it done

Real problems it solves every day — for businesses, creators, and everyday tasks. Find the use case that fits you and start.

For Business

Review a Delivery Against the Invoice

Photograph the pallet or crates for an AI-assisted draft, then check the physical delivery, correct the tally, and follow the normal receiving procedure before signing. Do not rely on the image alone.

On Mobile

Run a Bar Stocktake from Your Phone

Snap every shelf and cold-room row with your phone camera, add each shot to the Tally sheet, and export the full stocktake as a CSV or a branded PDF report for the manager.

Productivity

Audit Multiple Warehouses in One Sitting

Open Bulk audit to run Distinct objects mode across every shelf photo, then review every result before using the grand total.

For Developers

Isolate One Product on a Mixed Shelf

For one brand or SKU, mark a complete bottle in the Examples setting before counting, then review every marker for similar-looking products before using the tally.

For Business

Share a Reviewed Count with Your Team

After checking and correcting the markers against physical stock, save the tally and copy a read-only team link so a manager can review the result. The shared image is not proof of quantity by itself.

For Business

Count Empty Bottle Returns for Deposit Refunds

Photograph a crate or trolley of empty bottles for a draft tally, then physically review and correct it before reconciling a deposit refund or exchange.

Watch each transformation land

Every photo crosses the slash untouched and comes out the other side finished.
