Count test tubes in a rack from a photo
Works with JPG, PNG, WEBP · Free up to 20 MB, Premium 50 MB
Spread the test tubes one layer deep on a tray or flat surface and photograph from directly above — counted detections receive dots for review. Built for pharmacies, clinics, labs and care homes — review and correct each photo before adding it to a CSV or PDF tally.
- Review the photo, then count visible test tubes
- Count without marking; add example boxes if you need a guided recount
- Stop counting the same test tubes twice to be sure of the total

Tips for an accurate count
• Use an even, well-lit photo with the test tubes fully in frame
• Check that each marked example boxes a whole test tubes rather than a repeated part
• Dots and heatmap show retained detections — review and correct the tally
About the Test Tubes Counter
The test tubes counter counts visible test tubes from your photo and marks detections for review. Auto mode uses the selected item name. For a guided recount, mark up to three examples of what you want counted. Visibility, overlap and similar-looking items can affect the total. Built for pharmacies, clinics, labs and care homes.
How It Works
1. Photograph your test tubes
2. Check that test tubes is selected, then choose Count
3. Review the markers and correct the tally; add example boxes for a guided recount if needed
4. Add to the tally sheet and export your count as CSV
Perfect For
• Lab consumable stock counts across racks
• Sample batch tallies before processing
• Goods-in checks against a supplier order
• Draft inventory figures for a lab quality record
Counting test tubes from directly above the rack
Test tubes in a rack are easiest to count from overhead, where every cap or open mouth becomes a small circle in a grid. Lab managers use that photo for consumable stock counts across racks, for a sample batch tally before a run, and for goods-in checks against a supplier order. The usual trap is the rack itself: an empty rack hole is also a ring, and from above it can look a lot like an uncapped tube. Capped tubes with colored tops separate cleanly from empty positions; open tubes need a closer look at every marker.
Hold the phone level over the center of the rack so the outer rows are not seen at a slant, which makes tall tubes lean into one another in the frame. When a rack mixes cap colors or tube sizes, use Similar items and mark one example of each kind, up to three, and the Found per example rows show how the total splits. Loose tubes still in their bag should be tipped onto a tray and spread one layer deep first.
Handwriting and barcodes on the labels are not read, so sample IDs still come from your log. Add each rack as its own labelled tally row and export the CSV for the lab record. Vials standing in a rack follow the same overhead method, and a consumables stock-take across several shelves fits better on the inventory counter.
Rack checks before you shoot
- Shoot straight down, not from the front of the bench
- Fill the frame with one rack at a time
- Note empty positions in the tally label if they matter to you
- Mark a capped tube as the example when the rack also holds open ones
Frequently asked questions
- Do the items need to be separated before counting?
- Slight touching can work, but full overlaps hide items and make the result less reliable. Spread them one layer deep under even light, mark a clear example, and review every result marker.
- What if the photo has more than just test tubes in it?
- Auto mode uses the selected item name to find what to count. For a guided recount, mark one complete, clearly visible test tubes — up to 3 examples for different-looking kinds. Similar-looking distractors can still affect the result, so review every marker before using the total.
- Can I count several photos into one total?
- Yes — count each photo and add every reviewed result to the tally sheet as a labelled row. If you use example boxes, mark them separately on each photo. Export the tally as CSV or a PDF report, or save it to your account.
- Is it free and private?
- Yes. You can count, review and download a free result without an account. Downloads are free without a watermark. No signup required. Server-processed photos are encrypted in transit and removed under our Security policy.
