Scan a receipt photo to text you can copy or save

This receipt to text tool reads the printed lines on a receipt photo and returns them as text. It is a quick receipt scanner for copying a merchant name, a date, an order number or a return policy without retyping it. The result is a transcription with no spreadsheet columns and no fields, and the photo is not changed. You can edit the text, copy it, or save it as a file.

Scan a receipt to text online

To extract text from receipt image files, lay the receipt flat on a plain surface and photograph it from directly above so the lines run straight. Receipts are long and narrow, so move closer until the print fills the frame. Upload the image, choose the language of the receipt and select Extract text; the lines appear in a box to read against the paper.

  1. Photograph the receipt flat, straight on, in even light.
  2. Upload the picture and set the receipt language.
  3. Select Extract text and wait for the lines to appear.
  4. Compare totals, dates and reference numbers with the paper.
  5. Select Copy Text, or choose a file type under Download as.

Read a faded or crumpled thermal receipt

Thermal print fades and creases break letters, so a close, evenly lit photo helps more than any setting. If words are missing, try another Engine and run it again: Engine 2 can cope better with unusual type, and Engine 1 is the quicker option. Whatever is not visible in the photo cannot be read, so check every amount that matters against the paper.

Choose text, a spreadsheet or receipt fields

Text suits copying wording. For item rows with prices in a grid, turn the items into spreadsheet rows or export them as CSV. For vendor, date, total and tax as named fields, use the receipt extractor, which also accepts a PDF receipt.

Work through a stack of receipts

Each photo is read on its own, so a stack means one run per receipt. Premium accounts can also use Batch mode: add the whole pile with the same Language and Engine, and each receipt comes back as its own text file inside a ZIP. Name the photos by date first so the files sort in order.

Before you photograph a receipt

  • Smooth out folds and photograph the whole receipt, from header to footer.
  • Keep your thumb and any shadows off the print.
  • Check dates, decimal points and totals against the paper, since a tiny mark can change an amount.
  • Choose the receipt language, because store names and item words in another language need the matching setting.

Copy a purchase reference without retyping faded receipt print

Recover the readable words and numbers from a receipt when you need a transcription rather than a spreadsheet. Review merchant details, dates and totals against the original, especially on narrow or faded thermal paper.

Purchase details for a support conversation

Copy verified merchant, date and printed reference information into a message while retaining the original receipt image.

Readable receipt notes

Prepare a text record of an item description or return-policy wording, checking any abbreviations that could change its interpretation.

Verify the receipt wording you actually need to reuse

  1. Photograph the receipt flat with readable header, item and footer text.
  2. Extract and compare dates, reference numbers, decimal points and important policy wording.
  3. Correct the transcription and copy the relevant details; a saved TXT is the extracted text without your edits.

Barcodes, wrapped lines and keeping proof of purchase

Does receipt to text separate items into spreadsheet columns?
The output is a text transcription. Use Receipt to Excel or CSV when you need an editable item grid for analysis or import.
Can OCR recover a receipt number from a barcode?
Do not treat this as a barcode decoder. It may read human-readable digits printed near the code, which should be checked against the receipt.
Why are two receipt lines combined in the text output?
Narrow spacing and wrapped item descriptions can affect reading order. Restore the line breaks during review where they change the meaning.
Should the original receipt be kept after text extraction?
Yes. The text is a transcription that may contain errors and does not replace the original proof of purchase.
Is there receipt OCR software that works without an install?
Yes. This page works in a browser on a phone or computer, so there is no receipt scanner app or desktop software to set up. Upload a photo of the receipt, select Extract text, and copy the result or save it as a file.
How do I get the total from a receipt photo?
Extract the text, then look for the total line in the box and compare it with the paper. This page returns lines of text, not named fields. If you want the total returned as its own field, Receipt Extractor reads vendor, date, total and tax from a receipt.
Can I scan a PDF receipt to text?
This page takes image files, so a PDF goes elsewhere. Receipt Extractor accepts a receipt as a photo or a PDF, and PDF to Text reads a PDF and returns its text. A screenshot of the PDF page also works here because it is an image.
Can I scan a receipt in another language or currency?
Yes. Pick the language the receipt is printed in from the Language list. Currency signs and decimal commas are read as characters, so check each amount against the paper, especially where a comma and a point could be swapped.
