In short: choose XCF for editing in GIMP with layers, channels and paths intact; choose PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.

XCF to PNG with transparent areas intact

PNG is the natural target for GIMP work that uses transparency: logos, icons, stickers, overlays and web graphics. The converter flattens the XCF, whether saved in GIMP 2.x or GIMP 3, the way GIMP renders it, merging the visible layers with their modes and masks, and keeps every transparent and semi-transparent pixel, so drop shadows and anti-aliased edges come through intact.

Only one picture comes out: the merged canvas. Hidden layers are not included and nothing outside the canvas boundary is kept, so a layer parked off to the side for later will not appear. Paths, selections and guides are not part of the image either. To check the transparency, switch the preview between Grid, which puts a checkerboard behind the image, and Website, which shows it on a plain page.

From the PNG, turn a logo into a favicon or Windows icon, make a sticker with an outline, or convert it to WebP for faster pages. PNG has no quality setting, and a canvas with large photo layers can produce a big file; compress the PNG if a site limits upload size.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert XCF to PNG?
Upload your XCF file above. It is converted to PNG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting XCF to PNG lose quality?
No. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is kept exactly.
Will the PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. PNG supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
XCF or PNG: which should I use?
Use XCF for editing in GIMP with layers, channels and paths intact. Use PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs. Keep in mind the main drawback of PNG: large files for photographs.

XCF is GIMP’s working format: it keeps layers, channels, paths and selections so an image stays editable. Most other apps can’t open it.
Can I convert XCF to PNG without GIMP?
Yes. The XCF file is opened on our servers, so you don’t need GIMP or any other software installed. Upload the file, then download the finished PNG.
