Why convert GIF to PNG?

  • PNG is lossless, so the converted image loses no further detail when you edit and save it again.
  • PNG is made for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.

What to expect when converting GIF to PNG

  • PNG can’t hold this animation, so an animated GIF is saved as its first frame.
  • Converting can’t bring back detail that GIF compression already removed: the PNG is an exact copy of the image as it is, usually in a bigger file.

In short: choose GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics; choose PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.

Pulling a crisp still out of a GIF as PNG

PNG is the natural partner for a GIF still: both are lossless, so the first frame comes out pixel for pixel, with flat colors, pixel art and lettering exactly as they were. Use it for a frame from a reaction GIF, an image for a slide deck, or a sticker you want to edit in a design app.

Transparency carries over, but a GIF pixel is either fully clear or fully solid, so the edges stay as hard as they were; PNG can't invent soft edges that never existed. The PNG is written in full color instead of a 256-color palette, which leaves you free to edit it with any colors, though the file can end up larger than the GIF frame it came from.

Only the first frame is converted. To change the animation as a whole rather than take a still from it, resize every frame at once or crop the whole loop to one area.

Check the PNG still

  • The frame shown is the one you wanted; it is always the first.
  • Edges look right with the Transparency preview set to Grid and then Website.
  • The file size suits where the image is going.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert GIF to PNG?
Upload your GIF file above. It is converted to PNG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting GIF to PNG lose quality?
No new loss is added: PNG stores the picture exactly as it is. Detail that GIF compression removed earlier can’t be restored.
Will the PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. PNG supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
Will the animation be kept?
No. PNG can’t hold animation, so an animated GIF is saved as its first frame.
GIF or PNG: which should I use?
Use GIF for short animations, stickers and flat-colour graphics. Use PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs. Keep in mind the main drawback of PNG: large files for photographs.
What is a GIF file?
GIF is the original web animation format. Each frame can use only 256 colours, so it suits simple graphics and short loops rather than photos.
Is the GIF to PNG converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.
