Why convert AVIF to PNG?
- PNG is supported far more widely than AVIF, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
- PNG is lossless, so the converted image loses no further detail when you edit and save it again.
- Transparent areas stay transparent: PNG supports smooth, partial transparency just like AVIF.
- PNG is made for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.
What to expect when converting AVIF to PNG
- Converting can’t bring back detail that AVIF compression already removed: the PNG is an exact copy of the image as it is, usually in a bigger file.
- Your original AVIF file isn’t changed: you download a new PNG copy.

AVIF to PNG: opening AVIF images in apps that refuse them
AVIF files often turn up without anyone choosing them. Many websites now send AVIF to browsers that support it, so Save image as hands you a .avif instead of the JPG or PNG you expected. Current browsers display it, but plenty of other software can't: older photo editors and viewers, some design and office programs, upload forms that list only JPG and PNG, and older phones and computers. PNG opens in practically all of them.
PNG is lossless, so the picture is kept exactly as the AVIF decodes, with no second round of compression. Transparency carries across too: a cut-out product or logo stays on a clear background, which is the main reason to pick PNG over JPG here. Switch the preview to Grid, which shows clear areas as a checkerboard, to confirm it. What changes is weight: AVIF is among the most compact formats and PNG among the largest for photos, so expect the PNG of a photo to be many times the size of the AVIF.
Choose by what happens next. For editing, layering or adding text, the PNG is the right working copy, because re-saving it loses nothing. For a photo you only need to email or post, a JPG is far smaller. If the PNG ends up too heavy for an upload form, compress it to a size limit or reduce its dimensions.
After converting AVIF to PNG
- Use the Grid preview to confirm transparent areas stayed clear.
- Read the file size on the preview before uploading anywhere with a cap.
- Open the PNG in the app that rejected the AVIF to confirm it loads.
- Keep the AVIF if your website still serves it; it is the lighter file.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert AVIF to PNG?
- Upload your AVIF file above. It is converted to PNG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
- Does converting AVIF to PNG lose quality?
- No new loss is added: PNG stores the picture exactly as it is. Detail that AVIF compression removed earlier can’t be restored.
- Will the PNG keep the transparent background?
- Yes. PNG supports smooth, partial transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
- AVIF or PNG: which should I use?
- Use AVIF for the smallest high-quality images for websites and apps. Use PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs. Keep in mind the main drawback of PNG: large files for photographs.
