Why convert HEIF to PNG?

  • PNG is supported far more widely than HEIF, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.
  • PNG is lossless, so the converted image loses no further detail when you edit and save it again.
  • PNG is made for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs.

What to expect when converting HEIF to PNG

  • Converting can’t bring back detail that HEIF compression already removed: the PNG is an exact copy of the image as it is, usually in a bigger file.
  • High-dynamic-range and wide-colour detail is converted to standard 8-bit colour.

HEIF to PNG: a lossless working copy of a .heif photo, and what it costs

PNG is the right target when the photo will be edited and saved again rather than just viewed. A JPG loses a little more detail every time it is re-saved, while a PNG stores each pixel exactly, so it can go through cropping, retouching and repeated saves in an editor without collecting new compression marks. That makes it a sound working copy for a portrait you plan to retouch, a product shot you will cut out, or a HEIF screenshot or diagram whose small text must stay sharp.

Be clear about what the PNG cannot add. It is a lossless snapshot of the converted photo, but detail the HEIF compression already threw away does not come back. Colors are written as standard 8-bit, so a 10-bit or HDR HEIF from a camera loses its extra tonal steps even though PNG could hold more. Expect a much bigger file as well, often many times the size of the HEIF, because lossless compression handles photographs poorly. And a camera photo has no transparent areas, so the PNG stays fully opaque until you remove the background for a transparent cut-out.

There is no quality slider for PNG, because nothing is discarded. This page reads files ending in .heif; an iPhone photo ending in .heic has its own HEIC to PNG converter. If what you really need is a small file for email or a website, save the HEIF as a JPG instead.

Check the PNG before you start editing

  • Compare colors with the original; an HDR or 10-bit HEIF can look duller in standard 8-bit color.
  • Read the KB figure on the preview before you email or upload the file.
  • Zoom in on fine text and edges to confirm they match the HEIF.
  • Keep the original .heif if you might want its wider color range later.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert HEIF to PNG?
Upload your HEIF file above. It is converted to PNG automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting HEIF to PNG lose quality?
No new loss is added: PNG stores the picture exactly as it is. Detail that HEIF compression removed earlier can’t be restored.
HEIF or PNG: which should I use?
Use HEIF for storing high-quality photos in less space on phones and cameras. Use PNG for screenshots, logos, text graphics and cut-outs. Keep in mind the main drawback of PNG: large files for photographs.
What is a HEIF file?
HEIF is the open standard behind HEIC. Samsung phones and several Canon, Sony and Fujifilm cameras can save HEIF photos, which are compact but not yet widely accepted.
Is the HEIF to PNG converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
