It is an Indian / sargam notation maker — it writes Sa Re Ga Ma swaras on a taal grid, the standard system for Gurmat Sangeet (Sikh kirtan) and Hindustani classical music. It does not produce Western five-line staff notation with treble or bass clefs. If you want sargam, shabad and taal sheets, it is built for exactly that.

Yes. Write both the swaras and the lyrics in Gurmukhi (Punjabi), Devanagari (Hindi) or Roman script, so the same sheet works for Gurmat Sangeet shabad kirtan and Hindustani classical alike. Komal shows as an underline, tivra Ma as an overline, and lower/upper octaves as dots below or above the swara.

Download every sheet as PNG (quick WhatsApp sharing), PDF (a clean print-ready handout) or Excel (an editable grid). Add your name in the teacher-credit box or switch on the watermark, and it prints on the PNG and PDF exports so students know which teacher the notation came from; the Excel export has neither.

Open the Taal & script tab and tap 'Create a custom taal', then set the name, the number of matras (beats), how the vibhags (sections) divide them, and which beats are sam, tali or khali markers. Once applied it's saved to your browser and appears alongside the built-in taals like Teentaal and Ektaal for future sheets.

In the Play tab, pick a tempo (laya) of Vilambit (slow, 50 BPM), Madhya (medium, 90 BPM) or Drut (fast, 160 BPM), and use the Sa pitch dropdown to shift the reference key up or down to match a singer's range. Toggle Tanpura drone on for a sustained background tone and Taal beat to hear an audible click on each beat while the notation plays.

Yes. In the Play tab, set Loop to the specific line number instead of 'Off' or 'Whole piece' — playback then repeats only that line continuously, which is useful for students working through one difficult ang or phrase before moving to the next.

Turning on 'Show key/legend on the sheet' in the Details panel prints a small reference key explaining the komal (underline), tivra (overline) and octave-dot notation marks directly on the PDF, PNG or printed page — handy for students who are new to reading sargam notation.

Create a live link in the Share & download tab to get a short, always-latest link, then set your teacher name and, if you like, a watermark in the Credit panel before sharing so students know it's your official version. Students who open the link can use the Play tab's tempo, Sa pitch, taal click and loop-by-line controls to practice at their own pace without needing an account.

Yes. The Notation System dropdown in the Taal & script tab switches the whole sheet between Sargam (Sa Re Ga Ma), Solfège (Do Re Mi), Letter (C D E) and Numbered (1 2 3, the jianpu system) — the underlying degree, accidental and octave data stays identical, only how it's drawn changes. The Swara Script dropdown (Roman, Gurmukhi, Devanagari) only applies when Notation System is set to Sargam, since the other three systems always render in Latin characters.

Select a beat, then tap 'Split beat (2 notes)' in the Notes panel — a Note 1 / Note 2 tab appears above the swara keypad so you can set a different degree, accidental and octave for each half of that one beat. Tap 'Single note' whenever you want to merge it back down to one note.

Rest clears the beat to silence — nothing sounds and nothing is drawn there. Sustain instead draws a dash and holds the previous swara's pitch through that beat during playback, which is how you notate a note carrying over rather than a new note being struck.

Use '+ Add line' in the Notes panel to append another row of beats matching the current taal's length, or '− Remove line' to drop the last one. Select any beat in a line and type into the Line field to label it — teachers commonly use Sthai, Antara, Mukhda or a verse number so students can see which section they're on.

'Create live link' in the Share & download tab publishes an always-latest link — edit the sheet and choose 'Update live link', and the same link shows the update, which is best for a link you've already handed out to students. 'Create snapshot link' instead encodes a one-time snapshot of the sheet directly into the URL with no server storage, so it never changes even if you edit the sheet again later. The embed code, shown once you create a live link, is an iframe snippet for pasting the live sheet into a blog post or class website.

These are free-text fields printed on the sheet's header — Raag names the raag or scale, Composer credits who wrote the piece, and Laya (in Details) is a text label like 'Vilambit' or 'Madhya' describing the intended tempo in words. This is separate from the Play tab's Tempo buttons, which set the actual playback speed in BPM rather than just labeling the printed sheet.

Both the landing screen and the Templates tab list ready-made compositions — filtered to your notation tradition when you arrive from a specific style's page — and tapping one loads its taal, lyrics and swaras straight into the editor so you can edit rather than start from an empty grid. Tap 'Start blank' instead to build a sheet from scratch.

In the Notes tab, tap 'Reset sheet' — it doesn't wipe the composition immediately; the button switches to a 'Confirm reset' state (with a Cancel option alongside it) so you have to tap it a second time to actually clear the sheet. Resetting wipes every line, beat, swara and lyric back to blank, but keeps your selected taal, notation system, swara/lyric scripts and teacher-credit details untouched, so you can start a fresh composition on the same setup.

The Vibhags field must add up to exactly the total number of Matras you set — for example '4,4' only works for an 8-matra taal — otherwise the Apply button stays disabled with an error message until the numbers match. Once the pattern is valid, a marker dropdown appears for each vibhag's starting beat (defaulting to X for the first, then 2, 3, 4…) so you can pick any symbol from X, 2-7 or 0 instead of the auto-numbered default, matching how your own tradition marks sam, tali and khali.

Music Notation Maker does not take a file. It works from the notes and settings you enter on the staff. If nothing is generated, check that the fields on the page are filled in and, where a link is needed, that the whole link was pasted.

It can. Each line is padded or cut to the number of beats in the new taal, so going from a 16-beat taal to an 8-beat one removes beats 9 to 16 of every line, and going back does not restore them. A longer taal only adds empty beats. Choose the taal before you enter notes.

The PDF puts the whole sheet on one A4 page and scales it to fit, so a sheet with many lines or a long taal shrinks. Download the PNG for a sharper image, split a long composition into two sheets, or use the Excel file when you need an editable grid.

The composition is not stored in your browser, and the shared links open a read-only page, so a sheet cannot be loaded back into the editor. Only custom taals you create are remembered. Finish editing in the open tab, then download the files or create a link before you leave.

The key that allows updates is held only in the open page, so the same link cannot be updated after a reload. Create live link then makes a new link, and the older link keeps showing the version you last published. Update the link from the same open page where you created it.

Sa and Pa are fixed notes, so they take neither mark. Komal is available for Re, Ga, Dha and Ni, and Tivra is available for Ma only. The buttons switch off for other swaras. If a mark button looks disabled, select a swara that can take it, then press the button again.
