JFIF to JPG: fixing the file name, and when to skip the converter

A .jfif file is a JPEG. The extension usually comes from Windows: when you save a picture from a web page, the browser may pick .jfif instead of .jpg, and upload forms, older apps and some phones then refuse it even though the image inside is ordinary JPEG data.

Because the data is already JPEG, renaming the extension from .jfif to .jpg on your computer is often all it takes, and it changes nothing in the picture. The converter does something different: it decodes the image and writes a fresh JPG at the quality you set, 90 by default. That helps when renaming is awkward, such as on a phone or a locked-down work PC, or when you also want a smaller file, since lowering the slider shrinks the JPG. At 90 or above, color detail is kept at full resolution, which keeps colored text and edges crisp.
