Why convert JFIF to BMP?

  • BMP is lossless, so the converted image loses no further detail when you edit and save it again.
  • BMP is made for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.

What to expect when converting JFIF to BMP

  • Converting can’t bring back detail that JFIF compression already removed: the BMP is an exact copy of the image as it is, usually in a bigger file.
  • Your original JFIF file isn’t changed: you download a new BMP copy.

In short: choose JFIF for nothing a JPG can’t do — it holds the same image data; choose BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels.

Converting JFIF to BMP for programs that need raw bitmaps

Some programs never learned the .jfif extension, and a few never handled compressed images at all: older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that work on raw pixels. BMP is the format they read. The converter decodes the JFIF and writes an uncompressed 24-bit bitmap with identical pixel dimensions.

The BMP shows the same image quality as the JFIF, compression marks and all, since nothing is improved or lost in the move. File size jumps, because each pixel takes three bytes: a 2000 × 1500 image comes to about 9 MB.

If the old program only failed because of the extension, try JFIF to JPG first; it keeps the file small. When BMP really is required and the target has a fixed screen size, resize to that resolution before converting.

Before you rely on the BMP

  • Open it in the program that needs it; some read only certain bitmap variants.
  • Check that the dimensions match the screen or canvas it will fill.
  • Keep the JFIF; it is the far smaller file for storage and sharing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JFIF to BMP?
Upload your JFIF file above. It is converted to BMP automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting JFIF to BMP lose quality?
No new loss is added: BMP stores the picture exactly as it is. Detail that JFIF compression removed earlier can’t be restored.
JFIF or BMP: which should I use?
Use JFIF for nothing a JPG can’t do — it holds the same image data. Use BMP for older Windows programs, embedded devices and tools that need raw pixels. Keep in mind the main drawback of BMP: very large files and no transparency.
What is a JFIF file?
A .jfif file is a JPEG with an unusual extension; Windows and some browsers save web images this way. The picture is identical to a .jpg, but many sites and apps refuse the .jfif name.
Is the JFIF to BMP converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.

For JPG, WebP, AVIF and image-to-PDF output: higher keeps more detail but makes a bigger file; 60–80 suits most photos. Documents (Publisher, XPS, EPS…) become PDFs with every page and sharp text, with no quality setting.

For WebP and AVIF output: keeps every pixel exactly (best for logos, graphics and transparency) at the cost of a larger file.
