Why convert JFIF to ICO?

  • One ICO bundles the standard 16 to 256 px icon sizes (up to the size of your image), ready for a favicon.ico or a Windows shortcut.
  • Browsers show the ICO as your site’s tab and bookmark icon when you save it as favicon.ico.

What to expect when converting JFIF to ICO

  • Icons are square, so a non-square image is centred on a transparent square. Sizes larger than your image aren’t created, so start from at least 256 × 256 pixels.
  • Your original JFIF file isn’t changed: you download a new ICO copy.

Creating an ICO icon from a JFIF image

Logos and avatars saved from websites on Windows often come down as .jfif, and turning one into a .ico is a quick way to get a shortcut icon or a basic favicon. Because a JFIF is a JPEG, it has no transparency: the background around the logo, usually white, appears in every icon size.

Images saved from a page are often small thumbnails. The ICO only includes sizes up to the image's longest side, so a 150-pixel JFIF produces 16, 32, 48, 64 and 128-pixel icons but no 256. Windows and high-resolution screens look for the big one, so search for a larger original if you can.

Square the image first, since a rectangle is shrunk and centered between transparent bands: crop it to a square, or cut a circle with clear corners for a round icon. To drop the white background entirely, remove it and convert the transparent PNG.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JFIF to ICO?
Upload your JFIF file above. It is converted to ICO automatically (change the output format or quality in the Settings tab if you need to), then click Download. There is nothing to install.
Does converting JFIF to ICO lose quality?
Each icon size is scaled down from your image and stored without further compression, so small sizes stay crisp.
JFIF or ICO: which should I use?
Use JFIF for nothing a JPG can’t do — it holds the same image data. Use ICO for website favicons and Windows app or shortcut icons. Keep in mind the main drawback of ICO: icons are square and at most 256 × 256 pixels.
What is a JFIF file?
A .jfif file is a JPEG with an unusual extension; Windows and some browsers save web images this way. The picture is identical to a .jpg, but many sites and apps refuse the .jfif name.
What sizes does the ICO file include?
The standard icon sizes of 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, skipping any larger than your image. Browsers and Windows pick the best size automatically.
Is the JFIF to ICO converter free?
Yes. Convert, preview and download a single result without creating an account. Premium adds batch conversion (many files into one ZIP) and larger uploads.
