JFIF to PNG: what changes, what doesn't, and when PNG is right

JFIF files are ordinary JPEG pictures with an unusual extension, the kind Windows often gives images saved from a browser. Converting one to PNG changes the container, not the picture: the PNG holds exactly the pixels the JFIF decodes to, including any blockiness or smudging the JPEG compression already introduced. PNG cannot restore that detail, but it stops further loss, because PNG is lossless every time it is saved.

That makes PNG the right choice in three situations: an app or form specifically asks for PNG; you plan to edit the image repeatedly, adding text, arrows or notes and saving each time; or you will crop and combine it with graphics that need sharp edges. If the only problem is that a site refuses the .jfif extension, converting to JPG solves it with a much smaller file.

Two common expectations don't hold. The PNG will be larger, usually much larger, because storing a photo losslessly takes more space. And it will not have a transparent background: a JFIF has no transparency, so the white or colored backdrop stays. To get a clear background, remove it with the background remover and download the cut-out as a PNG.
