Compressing JFIF images further as AVIF
AVIF is the smallest-file option among the formats this page writes, useful when JFIF images saved from the web are headed for a site you manage and every kilobyte counts. Because a JFIF is JPEG data, the picture has already been compressed once; converting to AVIF compresses it again with a more efficient method.
Pick quality by looking, not by number. The slider defaults to 90, which stays close to the JFIF but leaves savings on the table, and the tooltip beside it calls 60 to 80 the sweet spot for typical photos. Check the KB figure on the preview at a couple of settings. AVIF takes longer to encode than WebP or JPG, so allow a moment for each image.
AVIF is a delivery format, not an exchange format. Many editing apps and older devices can't open it, so keep the JFIF or a JPG copy for anything you will send or edit. If your site builder refuses AVIF, WebP is the next most compact choice.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert JFIF to AVIF?
