Why convert PS to PDF?

  • Every page of the PS becomes a page in the PDF, in the same order.
  • Text and shapes stay vectors, so the PDF stays sharp at any zoom and prints crisply.
  • Text stays selectable and searchable, so you can copy it or find a word.
  • PDF is supported far more widely than PS, so the file is easier to open, share and upload.

What to expect when converting PS to PDF

  • Fonts that aren’t embedded in the file are replaced with close equivalents of the same size and spacing.
  • Your original PS file isn’t changed: you download a new PDF copy.

Converting PostScript to a searchable, multi-page PDF

PDF grew out of PostScript, and converting is the usual way to make an old .ps report, thesis or print job readable today. Every page is kept in order, words remain real text and line art remains vector, so the PDF zooms cleanly and its contents can be searched and copied in any PDF viewer.

Pictures that were embedded in the PostScript as bitmaps stay bitmaps; only text and drawn shapes gain the sharpness of vectors. Fonts the file names but doesn't carry are substituted with similar ones, which can nudge where lines end, so scan headings and tables once before you circulate the PDF.

Once it is a PDF, the rest of the PDF tools apply. Split out the chapters you need, reduce the file size for email, or copy the text into a plain .txt file. When a single page as a picture is all you want, the PS to PNG converter is quicker.
