PostScript to PNG for diagrams, charts and typeset pages
PNG suits PostScript content made of text and lines: plots exported from scientific software, typeset equations, circuit diagrams and printed forms. Lossless compression keeps one-pixel lines and small type free of the blocky artifacts JPG adds around high-contrast edges, so the figure stays legible in a report, a wiki page or a lecture slide.
Only page one is drawn, at 150 DPI, on an opaque white page; PostScript pages have no transparent background to carry over, so the PNG has none either. A single figure saved as its own .ps file converts in one step. For a multi-page document, make a PDF that keeps every page and then render all pages as PNG at 150, 200 or 300 DPI.
A figure on a full page arrives with wide white margins, because a .ps keeps its whole page instead of cropping to the drawing. Crop the PNG to the figure before placing it. If the same figure also exists as an EPS, convert that version instead; EPS output is trimmed to the artwork's bounding box automatically.
