Counting marbles that roll, reflect and hide in jars

Marbles are counted to verify bulk packs for shops and wholesalers, to prepare craft and classroom kits, and to catalog a collection. Two things make them awkward: they roll away from any layout, and glass reflects the room, so each marble carries a bright highlight and clear marbles show the surface underneath them.

Use a tray with a raised rim, or lay down a towel or felt so the marbles stay where you put them. Soft, even light reduces the highlights; a single bright lamp puts a white spot on every marble that can look like a separate tiny object. In Distinct objects mode, raising Ignore small detections helps drop those spots. Shooters and standard marbles are different sizes, so mark one of each in Similar items if the lot mixes them.

A jar of marbles, the classic guess-how-many contest, cannot be counted from a photo of the jar, because only the marbles against the glass are visible. Pour them out and count the layer instead, then add each tray to the tally. Beads for craft kits and dice are counted with the same tray method.

Marble tray checks

  • A rimmed tray or cloth so marbles stay put
  • Soft light, no single bright lamp
  • Marbles poured out of jars and bags
  • Separate examples for shooters and standard sizes

Frequently asked questions

Do the items need to be separated before counting?
Slight touching can work, but full overlaps hide items and make the result less reliable. Spread them one layer deep under even light, mark a clear example, and review every result marker.
What if the photo has more than just marbles in it?
Auto mode uses the selected item name to find what to count. For a guided recount, mark one complete, clearly visible marbles — up to 3 examples for different-looking kinds. Similar-looking distractors can still affect the result, so review every marker before using the total.
Can I count several photos into one total?
Yes — count each photo and add every reviewed result to the tally sheet as a labelled row. If you use example boxes, mark them separately on each photo. Export the tally as CSV or a PDF report, or save it to your account.
Is it free and private?
Yes. You can count, review and download a free result without an account. Downloads are free without a watermark. No signup required. Server-processed photos are encrypted in transit and removed under our Security policy.
