Counting tennis balls in coaching baskets and on court
Tennis balls are counted by coaches before and after a session, by clubs taking inventory across courts, and by tournament staff checking ball stock. They lose pressure and fuzz over a season, so a regular count also tracks how many are being replaced. A ball hopper is the usual container, and its wire frame is the first thing to deal with.
Tip the hopper or basket out onto the court and spread the balls a little. The bright yellow felt contrasts well with most court surfaces. Shoot from above, standing on a bench if possible, so balls on the far side are not hidden behind the near ones. A mix of new and worn balls, or yellow and orange low-compression balls for juniors, needs one example per type in Similar items.
Court-by-court or coach-by-coach rows keep the tally readable once each count is checked. Sealed ball tins on a shelf can be counted as tins with the can counter, and other sports balls in a cart follow the same tip-out routine.

Frequently asked questions
- Does it work on a loose pile?
- It can only mark the visible layer. Spread items one layer deep, mark a clear example, and review and correct the result markers. Treat a visible-face count on a large pile as an estimate and use the same framing between checks.
- What if the photo has more than just tennis balls in it?
- The counter automatically looks for tennis balls in your photo. Similar-looking distractors can still affect the result, so review every marker before using the total.
- Can I count several photos into one total?
- Yes — count each photo and add every reviewed result to the tally sheet as a labelled row. Export the tally as CSV or a PDF report, or save it to your account.
- Is it free and private?
